Target Credit Card Review

5.0 / 5

The Target Credit Card is a good credit card that’s worth it for anyone with fair credit or better who regularly shops at Target. The Target RedCard, as it’s also known, has a $0 annual fee and offers 5% discount back on all Target purchases, including those made at Starbucks locations within Target stores.

Target Credit Card Review Highlights

Save 5% on most Target purchases

The Target Store Credit Card, also known as the RedCard, gives cardholders an indefinite 5% off sale on pretty much everything except pharmacy purchases, gift cards, wireless protection plans and a few other items. That’s a great deal, with the potential to save you hundreds of dollars per year, if Target is one of your favorite stores.

Don’t worry about yearly fees

The Target RedCard doesn’t charge an annual fee, which always makes it easier to justify opening a credit card just for purchases at a single store. This also saves you $22.29 compared to the average credit card, according to WalletHub’s latest Credit Card Landscape Report.

Enjoy 30 extra days for returns

Simply having a Target Credit Card gives you 30extra days to return purchases for a refund, on top of each item’s standard return window. That extra time could be a life-saver for someone with a busy schedule.

Get free shipping from Target.com

The Target RedCard makes it easier to shop online, thanks to the free standard shipping it gives you on all Target.com orders. So as long as you don’t need something at the last minute, you won’t have to pay extra for doing your shopping from home with a Target Card.

Qualify with “fair” credit

You only need “fair” credit to qualify for the Target RedCard, which means it’s possible to get approved with a credit score of just 620. You can see if you’re in the ballpark by checking your credit score for free on WalletHub.

You need fair credit or better to get approved for a Target Credit Card. For the best odds of being approved, it's recommended that you only apply for a Target Credit Card if your credit score is 640 or higher and you have enough income to afford monthly bill payments.

When you apply for a Target Credit Card, your credit score is one of the major factors that the card's issuer will consider. But it's not the only factor. Your income, employment status, debts, and housing information matter, too. But your odds of approval are generally higher if you have a credit score above the 640 mark.

Here are the Target Credit Card requirements for approval:

  • Minimum credit score:640+ (at least fair credit)
  • Age requirement:18 years old
  • Income requirement:Enough to afford monthly payments (wages, investments, etc.)
  • Citizenship:Must be a U.S. citizen with a valid Social Security Number
  • Bank account requirement:Must have a checking account at a bank in the U.S.

You can apply for the Target Credit Cardonline or in person at a local Target store. You may be approved instantly if your doesn't require application additional review. Otherwise, it can take 7-10 business days to receive a decision.

If approved, you will also be able to make purchases right away. You will receive a temporary credit card to use until your actual card arrives.

Here's what you should know about the Target Credit Card:

The Target Credit Card gives you a 5% discount at Target and Target.com. You'll also get 30 extra days for returns and free two-day shipping on Target.com orders. The card also offers a $0 annual fee.

Yes, Target actually has two credit cards, the Target Mastercard and the store version of this card, the Target Credit Card. Worst customer service I've ever encountered with a credit card, and a high interest rate to boot. Any time we have tried to make a large payment, they have held up the funds without actually crediting them to our account balance. In order to successfully pay, you must make multiple small payments or wait weeks for them to actually process the payments. Now they have closed our card after 23 years due to an error on their end. They never tried to pull funds from our bank and rejected payment twice, despite my having spoken to their agents multiple times and being assured everything was fine. Saving 5% is not worth the horrible service.

Horrible! There has been fraud on my account since August, and no one has assisted me. It keeps affecting my credit and accruing interest. The first claim was submitted in August 2023. They told me it was sent to the wrong department, as it was filed as a dispute instead of fraud, so they didn't transfer it to the appropriate department. They declined it and sent me a letter. I then addressed the issues they outlined, which I did, and I've had to send that letter four times, yet they still haven't resolved the issue. It is now March 2024, and I have not received any help. I haven't spent any more money at Target since this incident, and I refuse to shop there anymore. I will be contacting the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

I am going through the exact same thing with Target. I will be submitting a complaint of my own. I am also going to be contacting the BBB. I've called them multiple times and have not gotten a call back from them once. They said that I am responsible for a credit card payment I did not open - someone opened with an incorrect license number, target approved and now they are saying that I am responsible to pay. This is theft!

They are fast and efficient in business, they have great sales. The only problem I have is I have a very difficult time signing onto my target account. I always get an error message telling me that my sign on input is not valid. It's never changed and I never use to have problems getting onto the site. I would probably buy more merchandise were it not for the fact I have such a difficult signing in.

The Target Card is convenient to have when shopping at Target. However, using the website for payments is not very user friendly. There are too many steps to get to the right section, and the way the site is set up gives the feeling that they don't want you to pay off your balance but would rather have you pay the minimum.
