Segmentation is a logical and important part of marketing any product or a service. It helps in understanding the distinct groups already existing in the market. One approach to market segmentation is 'Value Based Segmentation' in which price charged commensurate the perceived value of the product or service delivered to the customer.

There are 6 steps to arrive at value based segmentation:

  1. Divide the market in sub-groups
  2. Identify their value drivers
  3. Identify your core competencies or operational constraints
  4. Divide market into Primary or Secondary subsegments
  5. Describe each segment
  6. Identify metrics or constraints (fences) driving each segment
