Does the U.S. Senate still have pages? ›

The Page Program is offered year round across four sessions: fall, spring, and two summer sessions. Page positions are highly competitive. Only 30 page positions are offered each session among all 100 senators. Because of this, not all senators are able to sponsor a page.

Personal responsibility, time management, and discipline are attributes that contribute to the success of Senate pages. Pages are paid on an annual salary basis of $37,238. Since pages serve for less than a year, they do not earn an entire annual salary.

The U.S. Constitution expressly grants each house of Congress the power to “punish its Members for disorderly Behaviour, and, with the Concurrence of two thirds, expel a Member.” Expulsion is the process by which a house of Congress removes one of its Members after the Member has been duly elected and seated.

The program ended in 2011, although the Senate Page program continued. Pages served within the U.S. House of Representatives for over 180 years.

The Senate Page Program is a highly competitive opportunity, with only 30 positions available each session to serve all 100 Senators. Due to the considerable interest in the program and the fact that not all Senators can sponsor a page, securing a spot is a challenging task.

There are four sessions of the Senate Page Program. The Fall session runs from early September through mid-January. The spring session runs from mid-January through mid-June. The summer includes two sessions which run three to four weeks long.

The program is highly selective, with only 30 Senate Pages accepted each term. There are four terms annually.

Pages must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or subject to agreements of the Department of State, and must have a Social Security number. Semester Page eligibility is limited to juniors in high school who will be 16 or 17 years old on or before the date of appointment.

The delegates voted on June 12 to set a minimum age of 30 for the Senate and later added a minimum age of 25 for serving in the House.

Hill jobs are hard to get and there are even fewer openings in the Senate than the House. Still, Senate offices have at least a couple of entry-level positions each year.

Senate page duties consist primarily of delivery of correspondence and legislative material within the Capitol complex. Other duties include preparing the Chamber for Senate sessions and carrying bills and amendments to the desk. There are four established page sessions.
