The Dollar Menu is making a McComeback. McDonald's said Monday that it is reviving the name of the once-popular value menu next month after a two-year absence, but this time the items will cost $1, $2 or $3.
Offering cheap eats has become a winning strategy for the world's largest hamburger chain, and a way to fight off other low-priced chains. In October, it attributed a rise in a key sales figure during the third quarter to its $1 sodas and a two-for-$5 promotion called McPick 2. And as more people visited its restaurants for deals, McDonald's said some also bought pricier burgers stuffed with crispy onions or guacamole, which helped sales.
McDonald's dumped the original Dollar Menu, with items costing $1, about four years ago as franchisees complained that their profits were squeezed by a rise in ingredient costs. But the move hurt sales as customers went elsewhere for low-priced fast food. In 2013, it launched the Dollar Menu & More, with items costing as much as $5, but discontinued it about two years ago and replaced it with the McPick 2.
The "$1 $2 $3 Dollar Menu" will become a permanent part of the McDonald's nationwide menu starting Jan. 4, the Oak Brook, Illinois-based company said. It tested other names, but customers liked the Dollar Menu one best, said Chris Kempczinski, who oversees McDonald's Corp.'s U.S. business.
"It's something that still resonates," he said.
There are a dozen items on the new menu, including a sausage burrito for a buck, a bacon McDouble for $2 and a Happy Meal for $3.

A value menu (not to be confused with a value meal) is a group of menu items at a fast food restaurant that are designed to be the least expensive items available.
This combo is essentially just what it sounds like. The new deal will allow customers to mix and match some of their favorite breakfast items, from hash browns to McMuffins.
For $1, you have your choice of a McChicken, a cheeseburger, any size soft drink, or a sausage burrito; for $2, two buttermilk crispy tenders, a bacon McDouble, a sausage McGriddle, or a small McCafé; and for $3, you can get a sausage McMuffin with egg, a triple cheeseburger, a Happy Meal, or the brand-new Classic ...
That menu exists because the chain, which famously had a $1 value menu, dropped that popular offering because franchisees hated it. The business goal of the Dollar Menu was to get customers to add to their orders. Instead, too many people simply ordered off the cheap menu.
One of the new menu launches is the Hot Cross Bun Pie bringing the classic warming cinnamon and spice flavours of a hot cross bun and putting it into a beloved Maccies pie. The pie is made from a cinnamon pastry and inside there's a spiced fruit mix and butter-flavour cream filling.
Together, they'll cost just $6. McDonald's fans can mix and match as they please, but adding fries and a drink will cost extra. McDonald's two for $6 menu includes the Big Mac, Quarter Pounder with Cheese, 10-piece Chicken McNuggets, and Filet-O-Fish.
Despite his ruse being outed, everyone is eager to come to the table for the "Not Homemade On Purpose Deal." You can pick up a $3.99 bundle at McDonalds, including a Double Cheeseburger, six-piece Spicy Chicken McNuggets or a McChicken, each bundled with small fries.
The Saver Meal Deal will see diners get either a double cheeseburger, fries and drink for £4.79, a mayo chicken, fries and a drink for £3.99, or a cheeseburger, fries and a drink for £3.99.
When most people think of a dollar menu, their minds likely go to McDonald's. The chain formally introduced its “Dollar Menu” in 2002, but prices would start to climb. The fast food giant would then move in a more value-oriented direction, with its last iteration in 2018.

The least popular item on the regular menu is the Filet-o-fish sandwich. Most of the time, we did not make these ahead of time except during the lunch rush, or if it was raining.
The Double Beef McNifca from Honduras was the most expensive item in North and Central America, coming out to $8.94 (though the price of a Big Mac in Massachusetts comes close).
The fast food chain is eliminating its self-serve soda machines by 2032 at its US restaurants, the company said, explaining that the change will make the experience consistent for customers and crew across the chain.

McDonald's rejects this either-or dichotomy and encourages customers to take advantage of its 2 for $3.50 Mix & Match with the McDouble and Hot 'n Spicy McChicken.
A fan favorite has made its way on the new 2 for $5 menu—the Quarter Pounder with cheese. Other options for the deal include a Big Mac, Filet-O-Fish, and 10-piece Chicken McNuggets.
