Whether a PC gamer or a console connoisseur, you have most likely come acrossthe sci-fi space action shooter game Destiny. Although Destiny’s original 2014release failed to earn a shining reputation due to its dependence on countlessdownloadable content packages (DLCs), it became a popular choice for manyplayers.
And just threeyears later, developer Bungie released the sequel, Destiny 2.
While there aresome concerns about Destiny 2 following in the steps of its prequel, they havelargely been unfounded. In reality, Destiny 2 has been a breath of fresh airfor fans of the original.
Mission: Protecthumanity
Destiny 2 evokes the same feelings that players of the prequel havecome to know and love while providing significantly more initial content.Players take on the role of a “Guardian”, a being chosen by “The Light” toprotect humanity. With multiple enemy factions after this light, it is theplayer’s duty to protect it.
TLDR: You are afuturistic space hero who is fighting for justice in a somewhat political, somewhat shoot-shoot-bang-bang way.
From shooting tolooting
Now that potential players have a vague idea of the story, what shouldthey expect from the world of Destiny 2? For starters, this is a first-personlooter shooter game with a third-person integration at some points. Thegameplay focuses heavily on daily grind quests and activities, and players willfind themselves praying for good loot drops.
The gameincorporates both Player versus Player (PvP) and Player versus Environment(PvE) modes, with riddles around the cosmos, gratifying loots, and friendly encountersalong the way. Within the PvE mode, gamers can choose a planet, fly to it, andshoot away to their heart’s content against a backdrop of side quests, movementpuzzles, lore, and more.
Users can alsomatch-make with random players or friends to battle in the rotating dungeon ofthe week or raid with their buddies against challenging (yet rewarding)content.
At the sametime, Destiny 2’s PvP content is no joke. Users can select from a range ofgaming modes, from basic 3v3 elimination play to 5v5 control with the aim of“capturing zones and keeping ‘em”. Then, some modes cycle through monthly andseasonal (e.g., Halloween, Christmas) rotations.
Hunter, Titan, orWarlock?
If all this sounds fun, there is more. At the startof the game, players create their characters, making a pivotal choice: class. The different class options include Hunter, Titan, and Warlock. While onlythree options may seem limiting, the four subclasses (Solar, Void, Arc, andStasis) allow for great variety. Each subclass contains its own skill tree, expanding the game’s possibilities. This summary only scratches the surface —gamers can best feel out the possibilities of Destiny 2 through hands-onexperience.
The downside: The cash investment
Despite all the great things Destiny 2 offers, the game has a majordownside. Enthusiasts will find that the further they explore this sci-fiworld, the more expensive it gets.
The base game is free, with enough content to giveplayers a feel for the world of Destiny. Initially, the PvP options and a goodrange of PvE content are unlocked. However, to experience the game in all itsglory, players will have to invest in some DLCs.
Not all of DLCs are necessary — the three latestreleases provide enough content to truly have a good time. But unfortunately, even that will cost a pretty penny, with DLCs selling for at least $20 andreaching an upper limit of $60. On top of that, preordering DLCs to get ahealthy batch of goodies and early content access will cost around $100.
PC players are luckier than their consolecounterparts since many websites offer DLCs at a much cheaper price (with a35–50 percent discount). Console players, on the other hand, will be staring atthe full price tag, except when the PlayStation and Xbox digital stores have sales.
Is this game yourdestiny?
Yes, it definitely is. While the money issue may be off-putting forsome, Destiny 2 offers so much content that players will need at least 500hours to course through its worlds. We all know that you have probablypurchased games that provide much less. If you are a fan of massive multiplayeronline games, first-person shooter games, and generally just social gaming, then Destiny 2 is right up your alley. Since the base game is free, give it atry to see what you’re missing out on. You might end up having the time of yourlife.
Happy hunting,Guardians.
