How big is a 120l camping bag? ›

60-85 Litres - Heavy Duty Rucksacks, Best for Longer Backpacking Adventures. If you'll be away for up to a week or more, you'll need to look at the larger end of the rucksack scale. An 85 litre backpack gives you all the capacity you need for a longer trip, while still being reasonably comfortable to carry.

Typically, the bag must be within the cabin baggage dimensions of around 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 22 cm), commonly considered the standard size for carry-on. Any bag within this dimension can fit most aeroplanes' overhead compartments.

For a day hike, a pack between 10 and 25 liters should be enough. You could fit your water bottle and your picnic in this pack, as well as a jacket and sunscreen, to cater for all weather conditions! For more than a day hike, you should think big! You will need a pack between 20 and 35 liters.

Trips of 5 days or more usually call for packs of 70 liters or more. These are also usually the preferred choice for winter treks lasting more than 1 night. (Larger packs can more comfortably accommodate extra clothing, a warmer sleeping bag and a 4-season tent, which typically includes extra poles.)

For this trip, I used a 32-liter backpack, the largest one I own, to hold everything I needed for two weeks. I packed my work computer, camera, and chargers; snacks, toiletries, and medications; one packing cube stuffed with clothing, and additional necessities like a raincoat, a tote, and a pair of shower slides.

Understand backpack sizing

As a rule of thumb, 25-30 liter backpacks are best for shorter weekend trips, while 30-45 liter backpacks are best for longer trips or long-term travel.

Large Backpacks: 40+ Liters

Large backpacks have a capacity of 40 liters or more, which is plenty of space for all your travel gear, even on longer journeys. If you're planning a backpacking trip for seven to ten days (or longer if you're travel-savvy and can pack light), this is the size you'll want.

Is a backpack a carry on? In many cases, as long as it's not larger than about 55L, yes, you can use many backpacking backpacks as a carry on. Or, if you want to check extra gear like tent stakes and trekking poles, check it all. Just pack it up in a more durable bag first to protect your precious gear.

Many airlines will accept a rucksack as a personal item, and if they do, the bag can still be your carry-on as long as it meets the airline's size requirements. The usual dimensions for domestic hand luggage are 22 x 14 x 9 in (56 x 36 x 23 cm). Some airlines will have a limit of 20 x 12 x 5.75 in (51 x 31 x 15 cm).

For vacations of 2 to 3 weeks, medium-sized luggage is ideal. It offers ample storage capacity without exceeding airline weight restrictions or becoming too difficult to maneuver. Consider options around 24 to 26 inches, which strike the ideal balance between accommodating your belongings and maintaining ease of use.

Assuming you don't carry much to work everyday and have a small computer, you could use a 24-liter backpack. If you carry a 15.6-inch laptop and want room for just about anything you may need for work, you could use a backpack up to 35 liters.

Duffel bags are available in many sizes, from compact carry-on bags that have a capacity of 20-30 liters and will hold a weekend's worth of clothes on up to massive duffels that hold 100 liters or more for adventures that require tons of gear.

Most backpacks are between 25 and 85 liters.

Large (27 to 30 inches)

Ideal for long trips or carrying the belongings of more than one traveller, these also have to be checked. New airline regulations limit individual luggage size to 30″ in length and 62″ total (height + width + depth). The fines for not abiding to the size rule are hefty.

'What size should I get? ' Almost always, the answer is that all of your camp-bound gear, clothes, bedding and personal effects should fit into two duffel bags*. Most camps will not allow more, and would like you to send less if you can manage it.
