Why are high quality texts important?
The use of high quality books within the reading curriculum is at the heart of a school's successful approach to engage and support children to become motivated and independent readers. If children enjoy reading, they read more frequently and become better readers.
Quality texts provide readers with an approachable context, making it easier to write from different perspectives and about abstract situations.
Knowledge of text type helps children organize their thoughts when receiving, retelling or reporting on a particular reading. Children unaware of text types may become confused or include unnecessary details in reports or retellings of a read aloud.
Simply put: a quality text engages the child and adult alike on different levels and it merits multiple readings; every time you read the text you get something new out of it. These texts will often trigger a lot of 'why' and 'I wonder' questions from students, which can lead to deep discussion and dissection of text.
Monitoring/Clarifying helps students to focus their attention on the fact that there may be reasons why the text is difficult to understand. Students can be taught to ask questions, reread, restate, and visualize making the text more comprehendible.
Access to a visual metalanguage will enable students and teachers to accurately and consistently talk about how meaning is made in visual texts, in the same way that we use a commonly understood grammar of language to talk about meaning making in written and spoken texts. A metalanguage enables a comparison of texts.
High-quality narrative literature includes rich and mature language—words and phrases that develop complex meaning and imagery for the reader. Such text introduces young readers to words that may be new or somewhat unknown as well as to familiar words used in new ways (e.g., figurative language).

Text relevance refers to the match between a reader's goal and information germane to that goal. Information that closely matches a reader's goal is more relevant, whereas information that does not match the goal is less relevant, regardless of its importance.
