Is a D Considered Passing? A letter grade of a D is technically considered passing because it not a failure. A D is any percentage between 60-69%, whereas a failure occurs below 60%. Even though a D is a passing grade, it's barely passing.

Calculating the Grade
For example, if you got a score of 90 percent on the test and the test is worth 20 percent of your overall grade, you would multiply 90 by 0.2 for a value of 18 points out of the possible 20 points.

However, there are some schools that consider a C the lowest passing grade, so the general standard is that anything below a 60% or 70% is failing, depending on the grading scale. In college and universities, a D is considered to be an unsatisfactory passing grade.

C+ GPA. A C+ letter grade is equivalent to a 2.3 GPA, or Grade Point Average, on a 4.0 GPA scale, and a percentage grade of 77–79.
A+, A, A- indicates excellent performance. B+, B, B- indicates good performance. C+, C, C- indicates satisfactory performance. D+, D, D- indicates less than satisfactory performance.
Think of it this way: 90% of your grade is a 96, 10% is a 60, that is represented by (. 9*96)+(. 1*60) = 92.4% total in the class.

A 100-point grade in and class will usually result in a three-point increase in your grade point average. So, if you have all A's and one B, a 100 on your B will turn it into an A and raise your GPA to 3.7.
