In Texas, this region is divided into three distinct sub-regions: the High Plains, the Edwards Plateau and the Llano Basin.
These are the Piney Woods, the Gulf Coast Plain, the Post Oak Belt, the Blackland Prairie, and the South Texas Plain. All five sections lie on the plain near the Gulf of Mexico.

The South Texas Plains.
The South Texas Plains are located in the extreme southern portion of the state. The boundary is formed in the north between Del Rio and San Antonio by the Balcones Escarpment. The Escarpment, some 1,000 feet high at Del Rio drops in elevation as one moves eastward.
The South Texas Plains are characterized by plains of thorny shrubs and trees and scattered patches of palms and subtropical woodlands in the Rio Grande Valley. The plains were once covered with open grasslands and a scattering of trees, and the valley woodlands were once more extensive.

The Coastal Plains region includes about one-third of Texas. It extends east and south from the Balcones Escarpment to the Gulf of Mexico. Most of Texas's large cities are in the Coastal Plains.
The North Central Plains region of Texas is the southern-most extension of a larger physiographic region known as the Central Lowlands which extends across much of the central United States including the upper Mississippi and Ohio river valleys.
