The School of Nursing provides education and training of international quality to undergraduate and postgraduate students. Nursing is a dynamic profession with opportunities for specialization after completing the basic Nursing degree.
You can become a registered nurse (RN) in just two years with your associate degree in nursing (ASN). RNs are the first line of care in many healthcare settings, and they are in increasingly high demand as healthcare organizations strive to accommodate a growing patient population.
Four (4) year degree and one (1) year community service. Register at the South African Nursing Council in General Nursing & Midwifery.
Study units for Diploma in General Nursing (Bridging course for enrolled nurses in 2023-2024) (offered by the Department of Health Studies) is to equip learners with the scientific nursing process in the clinical care of patients with conditions of the nervous system.
The Postgraduate Diploma in Education Management and Leadership is offered by the NWU Faculty of Education. The Qualification is on NQF level 8.
Is this the right qualification for you? The Access to Higher Education Diploma (Nursing) is a Level 3 qualification which prepares people without traditional qualifications for study at university.
Diploma in nursing - This qualification takes 3 years to be completed and students will be equipped to work as an enrolled nurse or staffing nurse. The only difference between completing a diploma versus a bachelor's degree is the duration and less detailed information is provided to students.
Is an ADN the same as an RN? An ADN is a two-year nursing degree that leads to becoming an RN. The RN credential is more than holding the degree: It includes earning an RN diploma, ADN, or BSN degree, passing the NCLEX, and completing state licensing requirements.
The ND/HND Nursing is a four-year UNINTERRUPTED programme i.e. 2 years for ND and 2 years for HND. Students start with the ND Nursing programme which is a non-terminal programme.

On completion of the diploma you will be a qualified general nurse, registered with the South African Nursing Council. This will enable you to practice in this capacity in the South African healthcare system. Your scope of practice will allow you to provide general nursing care.

Advanced/Diploma in Nursing (3 years): Student must acquire at least a matric education standard and have passed Mathematics, English, a First/Home Language, Life Orientation and Life Science. Finally, the student must enrol as a nurse with the South African Nursing Council.
