How do you shrink in Alice in Wonderland?
The Drink Me potion is a special liquid available only in Wonderland that when consumed, will make the drinker shrink in size. It will also grant the Shrink Sense ability.
Alice immediately shrinks, and though she can now fit through the door, she realizes she has left the key on the tabletop high above her. She alternately cries and scolds herself for crying before catching sight of a small cake with the words “EAT ME” underneath the table.
Alice realizes that the fanning motion causes her to shrink, so she fans herself down to a size that will allow her to fit through the door. Once again, Alice has forgotten the key, but before she can become upset, she tumbles into a pool of salt water.
Problems occur throughout her adventures because Alice does not know when she will grow larger or smaller. Eventually, Alice controls her size changes by nibbling sides of a mushroom. This allows Alice to control her size and use her height changes to her advantage when necessary.
The animals outside try to get her out of the house by throwing rocks at her, which inexplicably transform into cakes when they land in the house. Alice eats one of the cakes, which causes her to shrink to a small size.

The multiple changes to her body in the novel can symbolize her transition through puberty, as she does not understand all the changes that she experiences, and the end of those changes implies that she has now grown to become an adult.
On page 105, the King invokes rule 42, “All persons more than a mile high to leave the court.” The King wants Alice, who at the point has grown surprisingly large, to leave the court. Yet she fights back with logic, Alice says, “…that's not a regular rule: you invented it just now.”
After repulsing the rabbit's manservant, young Bill, a Lizard (who is trying to evict her), Alice notices that pebbles that are being thrown at her through a window are turning into cakes. Upon eating one of them, she shrinks until she is small enough to escape the rabbit's house and hide in a thick wood.
