Can I travel with 100ml perfume in hand luggage?
If you want to bring perfume in your hand luggage, you must comply with the “3-1-1 Rule”. This means that it must be in a container with 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) or less and placed in a single, clear, plastic, sealable bag for inspection.
You must take no more than 100 ml of any liquid on a flight. You must place liquids into individual 100 ml containers and remember that, in most cases, security won't accept larger containers, even if only partly full. All 100 ml containers must fit into a clear, plastic bag no bigger than 20×20 cm.
Perfume is considered a liquid and must be in containers that hold no more than 100ml in your carry-on luggage. Additionally, all liquids must be placed in a clear, plastic, sealable bag for screening.
TSA will not throw away your perfume if it meets the 3-1-1 rule and is in a clear, quart-sized bag. However, if your perfume exceeds the liquid limit or is not packaged correctly, TSA may confiscate it.
The main rule to remember is that you must not take any more than 100ml of a restricted liquid into the cabin of a plane, and those liquids should be placed into individual 100ml containers. How do you pack perfume?
If you haven't got the original box, or a box that fits your perfume, you should wrap the bottle in protective materials. Wrap each bottle in several layers of packing paper and bubble wrap, and secure this with tape. You should also seal the bottle, so the perfume doesn't spill.
Most airlines allow you to carry up to two litres of personal care aerosols in your checked baggage but note that different airlines (and check-in staff!) may interpret the policy differently, so make sure you check your airline's website before you pack.
This requirement will eventually be lifted, and the 100ml liquid container limit will be extended to 2 litres. Airports now have until June 2024 to upgrade their screening equipment and processes. Until then, passengers must follow the same rules as now until further notice or unless told otherwise.
Why was the 100ml liquids rule originally brought in? Liquids in quantities larger than 100ml have been verboten on commercial air travel since 2006 – and like so many flight regulations introduced in the decade following 9/11, it was originally an anti-terrorism measure.
