Ethanol Fuel Definition: Ethanol intended for fuel use. Fuel ethanol in the United States must be anhydrous (less than 1 percent water). Fuel ethanol is denatured (made unfit for human consumption), usually prior to transport from the ethanol production facility, by adding 2 to 5 volume percent petroleum, typically pentanes plus or conventional motor gasoline. Fuel ethanol is used principally for blending in low concentrations with motor gasoline as an oxygenate or octane enhancer. In high concentrations, it is used to fuel alternative-fuel vehicles specially designed for its use.

Which country ranks #1 in the production of ethanol? ›

The United States is the largest producer of ethanol fuel worldwide. In 2023, the North American country accounted for about 53 percent of the global ethanol fuel production. This figure equalled to 15.6 billion gallons of the fuel.

How much ethanol does the US produce a day? ›

Fuel ethanol production averaged 983,000 barrels per day the week ending April 12, down 73,000 barrels per day when compared to the 1.056 million barrels per day of production reported for the previous week, and the lowest level of production reported since mid-January.

How many barrels of ethanol does the US produce? ›

Total annual fuel ethanol production generally increased each year from 1981 through 2022. In 2022, U.S. fuel ethanol production (as measured by renewable fuels and oxygenate plant net production of fuel ethanol) was about 15.4 billion gallons (about 0.4 billion barrels).

What two countries produce 90% of the world's ethanol? ›

Correct: The two countries producing 90% of the world's ethanol are Brazil and the U.S.

Who is the largest exporter of ethanol? ›

The United States is the world leader in the supply and export of ethanol.

Where does the US get ethanol from? ›

Ethanol is a domestically produced alternative fuel most commonly made from corn in the United States. It is also made from cellulosic feedstocks, such as crop residues and wood—though this is not as common. U.S. ethanol plants are concentrated in the Midwest because of the proximity to corn production.

Who is the second largest producer of ethanol in the world? ›

Ethanol is a grain alcohol that can be blended with gasoline and used in regular motor vehicles at a concentration of up to ten percent. Brazil is the world's second-largest producing country, with an output of 8.3 billion gallons that same year.

What is the largest ethanol plant in the US? ›

Poet Biorefining is the largest ethanol producer in the United States. As of March 2023, the South Dakota-based company had an ethanol production capacity of 2.7 billion gallons per annum across 33 plants in the Midwest. Ethanol is used in chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing, and as a biofuel.

What state uses the most ethanol? ›

As the second largest motor vehicle market after California, it is unsurprising that both states are among the largest consumers of fuel ethanol. In 2021, the Texas transportation, commercial, and industrial sector consumed 35.5 million barrels of fuel ethanol compared with 34.1 million barrels in California.

How much does the US government subsidize ethanol? ›

The tax credit amount is $0.20 per gallon for non-aviation fuel and $0.35 per gallon for SAF. For facilities that satisfy the prevailing wage and apprenticeship requirements, the credit amount is $1.00 per gallon for non-aviation fuel and $1.75 per gallon for SAF.

Who invented ethanol fuel? ›

The Energy Information Agency (2005) describes the history of ethanol. Ethanol's first use was to power an engine in 1826, and in 1876, Nicolaus Otto, the inventor of the modern four-cycle internal combustion engine, used ethanol to power an early engine.

Which country produces the second highest quantity of ethanol behind the United States? ›

The United States ranks number one and Brazil ranks second as the largest producers of fuel ethanol and biodiesel.

How many barrels of fuel does the US use per day? ›

EIA uses product supplied to represent U.S. petroleum consumption. In 2022, the United States consumed an average of about 20.01 million barrels of petroleum per day, or a total of about 7.3 billion barrels of petroleum.

Who is the third largest producer of ethanol in the world? ›

India is the third largest global ethanol producer and can build on its rapid growth.

What percentage of US fuel is ethanol? ›

Ethanol is a renewable fuel made from various plant materials collectively known as "biomass." More than 98% of U.S. gasoline contains ethanol to oxygenate the fuel. Typically, gasoline contains E10 (10% ethanol, 90% gasoline), which reduces air pollution.

Who is the largest consumer of biofuel in the world? ›

Global biofuel consumption volume 2000-2030

The United States is set to remain the single largest biofuel consumer.

How much ethanol does the US use? ›
