As the world’s largest company by revenue with over 11,483 stores worldwide, Walmart’s POS system has to handle high transaction volumes, while providing easy access to data across all locations.

To meet these demands Walmart has built a custom POS solution for their stores, making use of SUSE Linux Enterprise Point-of-Service (SLEPOS), a secure open-source operating system for point-of-sale client devices, as a foundation.

The SUSE Enterprise Linux point of service system allows Walmart developers to build secure POS systems that are highly robust, with features such as unified admin tools, and centralized or multi-branch servers.

This has allowed Walmart to develop a highly flexible system that stores data across multiple levels (local, etc) while providing the ability to easily integrate with other services and streams of data.

These services include applications such as a mobile point of sale system (mPOS) that Walmart has been working on.

Walmart’s Mobile POS System

In addition to Walmart’s custom POS solution, they have also developed a Mobile POS (mPOS) for their garden centers which includes a “Check Out With Me” program in which store associates are provided with a Bluetooth printer and cellular payments device.

The intent of the new Walmart mobile POS system is to allow garden center employees to help checkout customers outside rather than having to go back into the store. With the “Check Out With Me” program devices enabling Walmart employees to easily accept payments and print receipts.

This enables garden center customers to reduce how far they have to haul that load of soil or set of trees.

Walmart’s Bring Your Own Device

Walmart has also been investing in its employee’s existing technology by developing the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program, which provides associates with access to Walmart’s digital network and a range of productivity apps within their existing smartphones.

This gives Walmart employees the ability to easily search for products, view prices and inventory levels, or discover company announcements without dependence on company technology.

The program is another way Walmart has committed to building technology solutions that equip their business and employees with the right tools so they can remain agile and committed to providing exceptional customer service and prices.
