1 Vocabulary First Aid: Immediate and temporary care given to the victim of an accident or sudden illness until professional medical help arrives. Barriers to Action: Anything personal that prevents a person from helping at a scene of an accident. Good Samaritan Law: An individual who stops to render assistance to another individual who has been injured or ill, cannot be held liable as long as he/she acts in good faith and to the best of his or her ability. Protected to the limit of your training.

2 Vocabulary Abandonment: When someone chooses to act at the scene of an emergency, he or she should not leave until other help is available. Implied Consent: When a patient is unconscious, or is so ill or badly injured that his or her judgment or ability to respond are impaired, one generally presumes that he or she consents to be treated.

5 The Three C’s #1: Check Check a) Scene Is it safe? Is immediate danger involved # of victims Clues to what happened Anyone else around to help Check b) Victim –Airway –Breathing –Circulation

6 #2: Call Call –Emergency # or 911 –Do you care or call first if you are alone? –Call first: Any child or adult who is unconscious Child or infant that you witness collapse Unconscious child or infant known to have heart problems –Care first: (2 min of care then call) An unconscious child you did not see collapse Any drowning victim

7 #3: Care Provide first aid care but follow the general guidelines: –Do no further harm –Monitor breathing and consciousness –Help rest in comfortable position –Reassure the person –Ready to perform first aid procedures
