In the 4/4 time signature, the numbers tell you that each measure will contain four quarter note beats. So each time you tap the beat, you're tapping the equivalent of one-quarter note.

The vast majority of songs in Western pop music are written in 4/4 time. And by that, we mean more than 90 percent; depending on the subgenre, this number can be even higher. 4/4 time rules supreme – but why? Are we born with it, is it acquired through cultural learning, or are we just a bit simple-minded?

The upper number indicates the number of beats in each measure, while the lower one defines the note value that equals one beat. Take a common time signature like 4/4. The top '4' tells us there are four beats per measure, and the bottom '4' means a quarter note signifies one beat.

The best way to do this is with your palms 👏🏿. Listen carefully to the song—first, identify the pulse by clapping, then pinpoint the accent, and finally, discern the subdivision of each pulse. The pulse and the accent will reveal how many beats are in each measure, while the subdivision will indicate the type of beat.

In 4/4 time, two half notes equals 4 beats (2+2=4). Each member of a triplet group has an equivalent beat time value equal to . 66 of it's original value. 1.33 + 1.33 + 1.33 = 4 beats (rounded to the nearest whole number).

Triplets are tricky (say that ten times fast) because we often encounter them in even-beat meters like 4/4. In these meters, we usually count and feel the rhythmic stresses in groups of two. For example, eighth notes are commonly counted “one and / two and / three and / four / and”.

Pop, rock, country music, and classical all use this specific signature. It might be difficult to believe that songs that vary so much in rhythm adhere to the same 4/4 time signature. The way that's possible is because 4/4 does not mean that there can only be four quarter notes to each measure.

What is the difference between a 4 4 time signature and a 3 4 time signature? ›

In 4/4 the strongest accent is on beat 1, and the second strongest accent is on beat 3, which puts only one beat between each accented beat. In 3/4, the accent is on beat one, which puts two beats between each accented beat. Because of this, 4/4 has a more "square" feel, while 3/4 has a more "round" feel.

So what's the difference, when we have 4/4, it's just that it has 4 quarter notes in each bar, and 4/8 means that there are 4 eighth notes in each bar.

The bottom number which is a four tells us that the quarter note gets the beat (or pulse). In 4/4 time, there are four quarter notes in every measure, and the quarter note gets the beat. Note: Sometimes 4/4 is noted with a large C for common time.
