Types of Questions (2024)

There are 5 types of questions that can be found in regular OWL assignments: true/false; multiple choice; multiple, multiple choice; matching; and short answer. For the first 4 types, the format of the question and possible answers is always the same. For short answer problems, the instructor can freely design the question.

True/False

True/false questions, not surprisingly, only have two possible answer choices. A radio button will be displayed before each of the two choices. Simply move your mouse over the radio button for the answer that you choose and click on it. (The inside of the radio button will be highlighted.) If you change your mind before submitting your answer, you can simply click on the other radio button to switch your highlighted choice.

Types of Questions (1)

Multiple Choice

Multiple choice questions work just like true/false questions except that there are more than two possible answer choices. Just click on the radio button of your choice for the correct answer.

Types of Questions (2)

Multiple, Multiple Choice

Multiple, multiple choice questions have many possible answer choices just like multiple choice questions do. The difference is that you can choose more than one correct answer. A check box will be displayed before each of the choices. Simply move your mouse over a check box and click on it to select the answer associated with it. (The check box will have an ‘x’ inside of it.) Select all the answers that you think are correct. If you change your mind before submitting your answer, you can click on a check box again to unselect it. You must select ALL of correct choices to have the question graded as correct.

Types of Questions (3)

Matching

Matching questions contain two lists. For each entry in the left-most list you need to match it to one of the entries in the right-most list. A small input box will be displayed before each entry in the list of the left. Click on a box (the cursor will flash inside of it) and enter the letter for the choice that matches it from the list on the right. Enter a letter for each of the items in the list on the left. You must get every match right to have the question graded as correct.

Types of Questions (4)

Note: The order of the answer choices in the above question types may be randomized. Therefore every time you see the question, the choices may be arranged differently.

Short Answer

Short answer questions contain one or more input boxes. The format of the question depends entirely on how your instructor writes the question. It could be a simple question with one answer box at the end. It could be a sentence or equation with many fill-in-the-blank answer boxes. It might also be a table whose entries need to be filled in.

Types of Questions (5)

To answer the question simply click in the input box (the cursor will flash at the left side of it) and then type in your answer. Enter answers for all the given input boxes. To enter an answer you may need to use superscripts/subscripts or to add a unit of measurement after a numerical value.

There are two different ways to be graded on multi-part short answer questions in Question and Exam type assignments. It may be that you are given partial credit for getting some, but not all parts correct. Otherwise you’ll have to get all parts of the answer right for the question to be graded as correct. Your instructor decides which grading method is used.
