Types of Motion. Linear Motion – movement in a straight line, in one direction. Reciprocating Motion – moving backwards and forwards. Oscillating Motion – swinging backwards and forwards.

Oscillating motion moves backwards and forwards in part of a circle, eg a pendulum of a mechanical clock. For a motion to be classed as oscillating, the motion must be repetitive.

Rotary motion – Rotary movement follows a circular path around a centre point such as a bicycle wheel.

Inversion and Eversion

Inversion is the turning of the foot to angle the bottom of the foot toward the midline, while eversion turns the bottom of the foot away from the midline. The foot has a greater range of inversion than eversion motion.

Reciprocating motion, also called reciprocation, is a repetitive up-and-down or back-and-forth linear motion. It is found in a wide range of mechanisms, including reciprocating engines and pumps. The two opposite motions that comprise a single reciprocation cycle are called strokes.
