As a CIP himself, Brandon Novak has helped numerous people get their family members the care they need to regain their sobriety. Keep reading to learn about the various types of substance abuse interventions and how they work.

What Is an Addiction Intervention?

There are various types of intervention programs because every person’s experience with addiction is different. Most interventions are not known to the addict until the final assembling, often referred to as wild intercessions. The main goal of these meetings is to help the person recognize their problem and get them help. Below are different interventions used to help people realize their substance abuse problems.

#1: Simple Intervention

A simple intervention is more about bringing them and their loved ones together to have a conversation. This is the most informal intervention method and is more casual than staging an intervention with many people. Simple interventions are most successful when organized and carried out alone or with the help of a specialist. The person in charge of this meeting should be one that the individual respects and is very close to.

#2: Classic Intervention

A classic intervention is a very basic intervention method. It involves educating and counseling all participants and family members ahead of time, which is also why they’re sometimes referred to as a Johnson Model of Intervention. This method also excludes the addict from the intervention plans, which are often required to get them there. Many individuals will disappear if they find out ahead of time about an intervention, so the group leader will have two or three participants bring the person to the meeting without telling them that they’re having one.

#3: Family System Intervention

Based on the “family frameworks” principle, the family system intervention type of addiction intervention is beneficial to families battling codependency, enabling behaviors, and addiction. This method offers support to both the individual and their loved ones to promote healing within the family as a unit. Relatives and close friends play a huge role in addicts’ lives, so they’re urged to receive therapy and counseling. Once everyone gets the help they need, getting the individual addiction treatment can be a smoother process.

#4: Crisis Intervention

Crisis interventions are commonly held following an incident in which the person posed a danger to themselves or others, including after incidents of self-harm, violence, and overdose. Also known as impromptu interventions, crisis interventions are a tough-love approach to helping the person realize their addiction and its repercussions and promoting safety.

Finding The Right Type of Intervention

While different intervention models adjust their techniques to the person’s situation, the above are the most general types of interventions. If you need help getting your loved one addiction treatment, Brandon Novak can help. As a past heroin addict who became a recovery advocate for Redemption Addiction Treatment Centers, he has personal experience with the struggles of addiction. As a CIP, he’s able to help families suffering from addiction find sobriety for their loved ones.
