What is 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional images? ›

The two-dimensional(2D) images have only two dimensions they are length and height. But, a three-dimensional image(3D) has length, height and width. Three-dimensional videos will bring the scenes alive before our eyes.

2D objects are defined as “ having length and breadth but no depth ” , and 3D objects are defined as “ having, or seem- ing to have, three dimensions ”1.

When a work of art is classified as being 2-dimensional, it means that the composition possesses the dimensions of length and width but does not possess depth. All 2-dimensional pieces of art, such as drawings, paintings, and prints, are made up of shapes.

2D graphics are widely used in animation and video games, providing a realistic, but flat, view of movement on the screen. 3D graphics provide realistic depth that allows the viewer to see into spaces, notice the movement of light and shadows, and gain a fuller understanding of what's being shown.

CT scans produce 2-dimensional images of a “slice” or section of the body, but the data can also be used to construct 3-dimensional images. A CT scan can be compared to looking at one slice of bread within a whole loaf.

In comparison to 2D imaging technology, 3D Ultrasounds allow for a more detailed and complete view of what is being analyzed, which can mitigate misdiagnosis. For example, this is extremely helpful for doctors to show patients fetal anomalies such as cleft lip.

3D objects are defined by the three spatial dimensions of height, width and depth. Human eyes have 3D perception, also known as depth perception. With depth perception, people see the world in all three spatial dimensions. The visual cortex in each human eye first perceives the three dimensions of space as 2D images.
