Making a referral

Referrals should be made to the local authority children's social care for the area where the child is living or is found. For these purposes, 'found' means the physical location where the child suffers, or is identified to be at risk of, harm or neglect.

A referral process in a school is when teachers or parents ask for extra help for a student who is having trouble. The school then works together to find the best way to support the students and help them improve.

An Initial Contact will be progressed to a Referral where the social worker or manager considers an assessment and/or services may be required for a Child in Need. Referrers should have the opportunity to discuss their concerns with a qualified social worker.
