What does the no trade clause mean? ›

Definition. A no-trade clause is a contractual clause that allows players to veto trades to certain teams. No-trade clauses are often worked into contract extensions and free-agent contracts as a perk for the players signing such deals.

If a player waives a clause for a trade, they generally agree to waive it only for the purposes of that specific trade, so the acquiring team agrees to put it back in place.

Defencemen John Klingberg and Matt Dumba have clauses that include a 10-team trade list, meaning they can't be dealt to one of those teams without their approval. Erik Karlsson has a full no-movement clause, meaning he can't be traded, waived or sent to the minors unless he agrees.

A modified or limited no-trade clause means a player can specify a predetermined number of teams he can or cannot be traded to.

Bradley Beal is the only NBA player who currently has a no-trade clause in his contract. The presence of that clause limited his trade market this past offseason when the Wizards sought to move him and helped steer him to a preferred destination (Phoenix) for a relatively modest return.

How can players qualify for a no-trade clause? Players become eligible for a no-trade clause once they complete eight years of service and four seasons with the team they're re-signing with. No-trade clauses cannot be negotiated into extensions, only new contracts.
