First retrograde: January 14 – February 3, 2022
Second retrograde: May 10 – June 3, 2022
Third retrograde: September 9 – October 2, 2022
Fourth retrograde: December 29 – January 18, 2023
“Ugh, is Mercury in retrograde again?!” Whether you’ve said this yourself or heard a friend (or your partner) say it, you can safely assume it is time to brace yourself for the chaos and communication blunders that are likely to ensue during the next few weeks both personally and in your relationships.
But what does this really mean? To put it simply, a few times a year the fast-moving planet of Mercury appears to slow down and move backwards. While Mercury doesn’t actually start orbiting backwards during this time, it is a phenomenon that seems to throw everything and everyone off. This year, we will experience this four times.
For those that closely follow astrology, Mercury is known as the planet of communication. So, it makes sense why communicating with your partner during retrograde might all of a sudden feel like a constant battle of not knowing what to say, or saying the wrong thing. Let’s take a look at what you can expect and how you can navigate these few weeks of retrograde based on your sign.
For those of you who are considered to be a fire sign, then you are likely to be impulsive and outgoing. While these are typically positive traits to carry, it might become a reason for disruption in your relationships during retrograde.
Aries in particular are known to be the queens (or kings) of communication among all the zodiac signs, so they might feel this shift in the universe more deeply than others. If all of a sudden you feel like your partner isn’t listening to a word you are saying, and forgetting about plans you told them about weeks ago, try not to freak out. Give yourself a chance to calm down before approaching them and nicely reminding them of your date night out.
Leos are outgoing, a bit egocentric, and enthusiastic. You know what you want, and have a hard time admitting when you are wrong. This is likely to cause more problems than it might usually while Mercury is in retrograde. If you are in a relationship with a Leo you might find that it is “easier” to take the blame for things, even if it wasn’t you who was in the wrong. While this might not be the right way to do things all the time, anything goes right now to ensure your relationship is sound.
If you are a Sagittarius or in a relationship with one, you can expect to hash out some unresolved mishaps right now. The last of the fire signs might find themselves wanting to resolve any issues in their personal lives while Mercury is seemingly orbiting backwards. This can be both a good thing and a bad thing. Try to approach these sensitive conversations with your partner in a non-confrontational manner.
A few words to describe the Earth signs would be, grounded, loyal, sensual, and patient. They are the most balanced of all the zodiac signs which can cause them to feel like the sky is falling when things aren’t as they should be.
If you are a Taurus, then you are likely to feel a disturbance of peace during this time. Sudden changes in your routine may lead you to lash out at your loved ones. Remember that this is all temporary and try to stay patient with your partner.
Virgos, while typically loyal to the core, might start doubting connections they have made with their romantic partner. If you are a Virgo or in a relationship with a Virgo, try to find balance during the retrograde and don’t let doubt take over.
During this season, Capricorns might ignore relationships all together and pour their attention into work or other social settings. When a Capricorn’s routine is disturbed, their focus is split between different avenues, and this can cause a lover to feel they aren’t getting the attention they want/need.
The air signs are known to be the most practical of them all. They like to take action, have good communication, and keep things lighthearted. As we know, things are not as they should be during retrogrades.
A Gemini might feel antsy, which may cause their partner to feel antsy by association. Gemini’s are typically social butterflies and while everything is out of whack (thanks Mercury), you might feel overwhelmed and not know how to interact as you normally do. Do what you can not to let any self-doubt/overthinking, especially with your relationship, creep in.
Libra’s might hyper focus on different uncertainties that they may not give much attention to on a normal day. If you are a Libra and looking to ease your mind about big relationship topics, such as finances during these next few weeks, take a look at this blog with your partner.
The final air sign, Aquarius will find themselves having to navigate stability in all areas of their lives, and relationships are no exception. To counteract this, an Aquarius should consciously try and nurture their romantic life by spending quality time with their significant other.
The water signs are known to be empathetic, emotional, and deeply rooted in their relationships.
Cancers will likely feed on the chaotic energy surrounding them and want to retreat from others. To keep their relationship at peace, a Cancer should be clear at communicating their needs during a retrograde by expressing that spending time alone isn’t negatively directed at their partner.
Scorpios might also become a bit introverted and need to focus on their relationship with themselves. Much like a Cancer, a Scorpio should relay this to their significant other to avoid any issues.
Finally, Pisces communication skills will really be put to the test during this period of time. Pisces are intuitive by nature and might begin questioning different aspects of their relationship. The best thing a Pisces can do is to voice what they are feeling, so that they don’t find themselves spiraling out of control.
Whether you are on the giving end or the receiving end, conversations and interactions just seem more tense, unsettling, and harder to navigate during a Mercury retrograde. Do what you can to relax and keep moving forward until things (aka Mercury) are back on track. Remember, now is not the time to jump to conclusions or make big decisions that may negatively affect your relationship. Control your emotions and show the universe who is boss!
