How can I lower my max bid. I have the item won now with 2 days left, but decided I don't want to pay as much as I made the Max.
Thanks

For the the conditions and time restrictions for canceling a bid see the eBay help page: Retracting or canceling your bid
Under reasons for retracting a bid it states:
"You accidentally entered the wrong bid amount due to a typographical error."
In most instances, you can retract the bid up to 12 hours before the listing ends.
If you find you have a valid reason for canceling a bid, fill out the Bid Retractions form, click this link to go to the retaction form:
You will need the auction/listing number
If it is because of a typo, choose the reason as "Entered wrong amount".
Your bid will be automatically removed.
You can then go back to that auction and enter the correct max bid you wish to place.

someone wrote : "The "entered wrong bid amount" bid retraction does not apply to your change of mind ("decided I don't want to pay as much as I made the Max.") "
Yes, the rules do say "if you changed your mind" but only a mind reader knows if you changed your mind or made a mistake. If you made a mistake, and later 'change your mind' because that bid was obviously a mistake, but you didn't catch that mistake until later, then you have every right to retract your bid and enter the correct amount. Therefore it is not a policey violation and I would never suggest anyone go against policy.
It is very cynical and vicious to expect that every mistake a buyer makes that they should be nailed to the cross for it, especially when there is a system in place to correct your mistake, no matter how that mistake happened or you look at it.
However, If you retract your bid because of a mistake, and you never make another bid to correct that mistake, then eBay will record that. If you do that enough, eBay may take action. But eBay's lackadaisical attitude concerning even this transgression seems to point to the fact that they know folks make mistakes and they aren't out to hang a nun.

God forbid the people who are NOT very understanding when a person makes an honest mistake. Sooner or later karma will catch up.

Sorry, that is not an option. That is why eBay gives you 2 screens to verify the bid you make.
Invalid bid retractions are policy violations.

Hi
There was no need to place a bid as early as you did. Next time, place the item on your Watch List ... and only bid when you are absolutely sure what you are willing to pay.
I'm afraid you'll have to live with your current max on THIS item if you want to comply with eBay policy.

The "entered wrong bid amount" bid retraction does not apply to your change of mind ("decided I don't want to pay as much as I made the Max.")
The bid retraction policy actually reads:
Whether you can retract a bid depends on the circ*mstances and timing of the bid. You can retract a bid for the following reasons:
You accidentally entered the wrong bid amount due to a typographical error. For example, you bid $99.50 instead of $9.95. If this happens, you need to reenter the correct bid amount right away. Changing your mind does not qualify as accidentally entering a wrong bid amount.
The item's description changed significantly after you entered your last bid.For example, the seller updated details about the item's features or condition.
You can't reach the seller by telephone or email.
