You spent weeks or even months convincing a hiring team that you’re the perfect fit, and you accepted the offer. But after thinking it over, you realize that you don’t want the position after all.

If you’re certain you don’t want the job, it’s better to tell the employer sooner rather than later. And, you wouldn’t be alone. Approximately 28% of workers admit that they’ve declined a job offer after they’ve accepted. But, how you handle the situation depends on the specifics.

Here’s advice on how to tell an employer you’ve changed your mind after you’ve accepted the offer.

You Accepted Verbally

Perhaps you got ahead of yourself in excitement and told the recruiter or hiring manager that you couldn’t wait to start before you got a written offer. Then you did some research into the company’s benefits package or culture and suddenly got cold feet about taking the job.

You’re not bound to take the job if you haven’t signed an employment agreement. A verbal acceptance doesn’t hold as much weight as a written one. Declining the position at this stage likely won’t burn any bridges, as long as you express your sincere appreciation for the opportunity and give a good reason for your change of heart.

You Accepted in Writing

The first thing you need to know is whether you signed an offer letter or an employment contract.

As a rule, you likely signed an offer letter. This letter includes basic—but not detailed—information about the terms of your employment. It explains that you’re being offered employment as whatever the job title is, defines your salary, that you’re an at-will employee, if it’s an exempt or non-exempt position, and your expected start date.

Walking Away
