To obtain a certified copy of a military discharge form DD-214, you must be authorized under Section 6107 of the Government Code.Those qualified to receive a copy of a veteran's DD-214 are:
The person who is the subject of the military discharge document.
A family member or legal representative of the person who is the subject of the military discharge document.
A County office that provides veteran's benefits upon written request of that office.
United States Official upon written request of that official.
If requesting your copy in person, you will be asked to complete theapplicationfor a copy of a military discharge and present a valid government issued ID.
If requesting a copy via fax, email, or regular mail, the request for a copy of a military discharge must be acknowledged by a Notary Public.
There is no cost for Certified Copies of a Military Discharge DD-214.
Find an original or certified copy of your military discharge certificate (DD214). If you need assistance obtaining your military records, the County Veteran Service Office (CVSO) can assist you. Visit the CVSO. Take your DD214 and government identification to the CVSO to obtain your Veteran Status Verification Form.
If you need assistance obtaining your military records, then contact any County Veteran Service Officer (CVSO). To obtain your DD-214 on your own, submit your request via the National Archives and Records Administration webpage or call 314-801-0800.
If you are a recently separated veteran, records can be found online via the VA eBenefits portal. However, most veterans and their next-of-kin can obtain free copies of their DD Form 214 (Report of Separation) and other records several ways: Use our eVetRecs system to create your request.
Note: Sections 23-30, “Character of Discharge,” can only be found on long form or undeleted copies of the DD214. Service 2 copy and Member 4 copy are the long-form copies. 23. Type of Separation: Discharge, administrative separation or other types are listed here.
