Children in Need 2022 appeal raises £4m less than last year (2024)

BBC Children in Need’s 2022 appeal raised over £35mon the night of its annual telethon, which is £4m less than last year.

The three-hour telethon raised £35,273,167 for vulnerable children and young people last Friday, with thefinal total to be announced later this yearas donations from acrossthe UK are collected andprocessed.

While last year’s appeal raised £39m on the night, it raised £51m overall as people continued to donate afterwards.

Theannual event'stotal is still down compared to the years before the pandemic hit. with £47m raised on-the-night in 2019 and £50m in 2018.

It is the 42nd appeal show the charity has run. It comes after it responded to criticism from disability campaigners last week, who said the show could “other” disabled children and play into harmful narratives.

Speaking on the night, Simon Antrobus, the chief executive of the charity said: “Too many children and young people across the UK are being impacted by the cost-of-living crisis, but the money raised this evening will quite simply change their lives and their futures.

“I would like to thank each and every person that gave so generously this evening, our supporters really should feel incredibly proud, I know I do. Thank you.”

The show was presented from Salford for the second year running by Ade Adepitan, Mel Giedroyc, Jason Manford, Chris Ramsey and Alex Scott.
