Flight tracker apps: what are they, and how do they work?

A flight tracker allows you to keep track of an airline flight's basic statistics and location as it departs, travels, and arrives at its destination. It is usually free and is extremely useful in two situations:

  • You are a passenger, and what to know the status of your flight
  • You are going to pick up someone from the airport and want to know precisely when they will arrive

The data is continuously updated in real-time, informing you of unexpected delays or cancellations.

For instance, with Flight Radar, you can even see where planes are in real-time, making it fun to check the status of your flight and flights that are flying above your head!

Is there any way of knowing if my flight will be delayed or cancelled?

Flights are often delayed or cancelled at the last minute. However, by checking the status of your flight before leaving for the airport you should have a solid hint on whether your flight is delayed or cancelled.

Here are a few tips for when you want to know in advance if your flight is delayed or cancelled:

  • Check the status of flights departing from or arriving at the airport — Are most of them delayed or cancelled? There are big chances that yours will be too.
  • Check the weather at your departure AND arrival airports — Is there any unusual and/or dangerous weather conditions such as thunderstorms, heavy rain/winds, etc? High are the chances for your flight to be delayed or even cancelled.
  • Check the situation at the airport — Is there an airline or airport staff strike? Is the airport really busy with security or check-in? Your flight might be delayed.

Why is my flight delayed or cancelled?

If you’ve just discovered that your flight has been delayed or cancelled and are wondering why this is the case, there are some possibilities as to why this has happened:

  • The incoming flight is delayed: This is very common and, especially if you are flying short-haul flights, it happens all the time.
  • Operational Issue: Perhaps the crew have reached their maximum working hours and new crew members need to be brought in to operate your flight.
  • Technical problems: There might be an issue with the plane. This is often the case as, due to the industry’s spectacularly high standards of safety, every single little thing that might not be working properly has to be checked and its functionality confirmed.
  • Air traffic control restrictions: Sometimes, ATC officers need to impose restrictions to ensure safety. This might happen during the flight (re-routing) or whilst waiting to take-off or land. If a plane misses its landing or departure slot, air traffic control will have to find a new slot for the aircraft to arrive or depart.
  • Adverse weather conditions: This one is tricky. Sometimes it is pretty obvious, as there might be a snowstorm outside. However, on some other occasions, you may find yourself waiting at the airport when outside there’s nothing but sunshine and mild temperatures. This happens because of the weather conditions at the airports involved in the previous leg of the aircraft's schedule as well as the meteorological circ*mstances at your destination.
  • Unruly passengers: Sometimes, it is just someone else's fault. Perhaps two other passengers got into a heated discussion with each other or with the crew. Every now and then, a passenger might simply refuse to be downgraded or check his or her cabin bag. You never know, but there are some crazy stories out there.
  • Airport problems: There is the possibility that some issues at the airport might affect your flight. For example, maybe there are very long queues at the security checkpoints or there was a foreign object on the tarmac. Other examples include an airport staff strike or airport equipment malfunctioning.
