Pantry goods attract moth species that lay their eggs in stored grains and processed products. These pests often come into homes inside infested food packages. Once inside, their eggs hatch into larvae that eat grains, dried nuts, cereals, and a variety of processed products.

Frequent cleaning and vacuuming practices can help decrease potential food or nesting resources. Running the air conditioner or dehumidifiers can help make your home less habitable for them. If you do these things and you think you got rid of them, keep doing them.

Bags of lavender and cedar balls are the most natural moth repellents. On the plus side, they are non-toxic and easy to get hold of. Cedar oil will kill young larvae (though not eggs, older larvae or moths) and lavender acts as a repellent. There also special bags for clothing such as wool, silk, etc.

Moths tend to dislike lavender and Cedar. Although lavender smells great to humans, it is highly repellent to insects like moths. Cedar is another great choice. Cedar masks the smell of natural fabrics and also gives clothing and linens a fresh, fragrant aroma.

Any items that are infested should be placed in a trash bag and sprinkled with diatomaceous earth. Then, tie the trash bag shut. You can also freeze infested items for 72 hours or have them dry-cleaned to kill Carpet Moth Eggs and larvae if you don't have diatomaceous earth to use.

Egg-laying takes 4-7 days. Eggs hatch in 4-10 days. Larvae eat for 2-3 months in favorable conditions or up to 30 months. Metamorphosis in a cocoon can take between 8-10 days (sometimes up to 50 days).

Vinegar is ideal for deterring moths. They have a super-sensitive sense of smell, designed to help them find food. The acrid smell of vinegar makes moths uncomfortable and encourages them to move on, explains Nate Nead, principal pest control expert at Bentonville Pest.

"Clothes moths can enter homes by hiding out in clothing, furniture or home goods purchased from thrift stores, garage sales or consignment shops; and pantry moths can enter via eggs laid in foods like flour, cereal, beans and dried fruit," added Tucker.

The most common way to contract a moth infestation is by carrying infected items into the home. Food and clothing items that have larvae or eggs hiding within them can introduce a moth problem when you least expect it. Unsealed containers in our pantries are perfect targets for pantry months.

Freeze Fabric – Some fabric simply cannot be washed. For those items, you can seal them in a plastic bag and put them in a freezer for about 12 hours. The intensely cold temperatures will kill eggs, larvae and moths.

Keep your clothes made from animal based fibres safe and moth-proof your house. Keep fabrics like wool, silk, fur, cashmere, and leather safely tucked away in airtight bins or containers. Vacuum-sealed bags are also very handy for keeping moth-prone fabrics safe. Also, make sure to seal gaps in windows or doors.

The larvae look much like a small branch. Having a body that looks like a stick helps the larvae hide from predators. The larvae can even adjust their color from brown to green to best match the branches they are feeding on.
