What is Alice instructor training? ›

This two-day Instructor Certification course is designed to teach proactive option-based strategies to increase survivability in a violent critical incident. The ALICE strategies empower individuals to participate in their own survival in the gap between when a violent situation begins and when law enforcement arrives.

ALERT, LOCKDOWN, INFORM, COUNTER, EVACUATE

These lockdown procedures are evaluated for improvements after each drill. To ensure schools are prepared to proactively handle the threat of an intruder or active shooter, all principals and teachers have been trained in ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate).

Approximate training time is between 45-60 minutes. Ideal for: Individuals. Families, Parents.

A 2018 contract for the Alisal Union School District in California showed a total cost of $32,100 over three years for services including online ALICE training for all employees and a two-day “train-the-trainer program” for district officials.

A trauma-informed approach is guided by the concept of the “Four R's.” This stands for Realize, Recognize, Respond and Resist re-traumatization.

Maintaining Certification

Once certified, instructors must refresh their training every two years using our online recertification course.

The letters ALICE stand for​ Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate: Alert​– inform people of the threat, giving as much information as possible. Lockdown​– Students and staff can choose to lockdown and barricade the room that they are in if they determine that it is not safe to evacuate.

Origins of ALICE Training

ALICE Training program was created out of a husband's desire for his wife to have a better plan in case of an active shooter event. After the Columbine High School shooting, Greg Crane was a law enforcement officer in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and his wife, Lisa, was an elementary principal.

Retired law enforcement officer Greg Crane developed the program. Today, the ALICE Training Institute conducts training for schools and businesses.

ALICE, a United Way acronym which stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, represents the increasing number of individuals and families who work, but are unable to meet their basic needs, including food, child care, housing, health care and transportation.
